Pronounced - 'Sow-in'

May 1st heralds the seasonal Pagan celebration of Samhain. Originally of Celtic origin, Samhain is the first Sabbat of the 'New Year'. The Neo-Pagan Wheel of the Year, represents the seasonal structure of time and the celebrations within each portion and Samhain acts as the 'New Year' celebration as it ends the summer portion and begins the winter.

Traditionally, Samhain represents the stock take time of the year. Harvest is in, winter will soon arrive and it is time to assess where things stand. It has also always defined a time of thinness within the barriers between the corporeal plane and the spiritual. A time when the Gods and the dead are closest to the living.

Due to the closeness of the spiritual realm, the Sabbat of Samhain is a veil. For some, it represents a time of darkness, danger and trickery. For others, the proximity of the supernatural world, brings them closer to ancestors past and many people celebrate Samhain with feasts that they 'share' with their dead loved ones (setting places, toasting and sharing memories etc.).
